About Fort Pickens Pensacola Webcam

Located on Santa Rosa Island, Florida, Fort Pickens stands as a monument to American military history. This pentagonal fort was built between 1829 and 1834 and named after American Revolutionary War hero Andrew Pickens. It was part of the Third System of fortifications, a defense strategy aimed at strengthening the United States’ coastal defenses.

Throughout its active years, Fort Pickens played key roles during significant events. One of its most storied periods was during the Civil War, where it remained under Union control despite being surrounded by Confederate territory. The fort’s strategic position allowed the Union to maintain a presence in the Gulf of Mexico, effectively blockading Confederate ports which played a crucial role in the Northern victory.

After the Civil War, the fort continued to serve as a military outpost but saw a gradual decline in military importance. It was briefly reactivated during the Spanish-American War, World War I, and World War II, serving various roles from a coastal defense site to a testing ground for new weapons.

Furthermore, the fort was once a prison for the Native American leader Geronimo, and some of his fellow warriors, after their surrender in 1886. They were held at Fort Pickens before being transferred to a prison in Oklahoma.

Now a part of the Gulf Islands National Seashore, Fort Pickens provides visitors a chance to explore the sprawling grounds and long-abandoned batteries, as well as to delve into the history that unfolded within its walls. This site not only offers historical insights but also boasts beautiful surroundings, with pristine beaches and a diverse range of wildlife, making it a popular destination for both history enthusiasts and nature lovers.
